Reality Capture of Water Treatment Works
COGNICA - Water Treatment Works, Welsh Water - Reality Capture
Welsh Water, which is the fifth-largest company based in Wales, supplies about 830 million litres of drinking water daily. Its various operations include maintaining 27,400 km of pipes and managing more than 830 wastewater treatment works.

Project Requirements

To ascertain the potential benefits of using 3D point cloud technology to map its treatment plants, Welsh Water sought the specialist advice of RSK Company, COGNICA.

COGNICA’s early history is linked to aiding large companies like Welsh Water. Using the latest technology, COGNICA organised and updated a similar Company’s system for managing its operational sites’ data.

The Pilot Project

Relying on this vast experience, COGNICA collaborated with Welsh Water in Duffryn Isaf. The project created a 3D point cloud containing data for one of Welsh Water’s treatments works. This enabled their digital officers to investigate the benefits of using 360° surveys to support their works operating manual.

Welsh Water are currently making use of large cylindrical screens, referred to as “The Igloo”, to promote the practice of conducting site inductions and management in an immersive environment without travelling to site.

The Solution

COGNICA’s scan would become part of an Innovation project to showcase the potential for wider adoption in Welsh Water. The data would also be used as part of the company’s incident reporting programme, encouraging employees to tag and raise issues easily in an intuitive but visually distinguishable manner.

Cerys Middle, Works Operating Manual Team Manager, summarises how, through using ground-breaking reality capture and digitalisation, “the company wanted to showcase its innovation in how it is working to be a modern, proactive and sustainable company for its members”.

COGNICA continues to improve Insite360, using feedback from customers such as Welsh Water, by looking at key achievements as well as lessons learned from its projects.

“As a proof-of-concept idea, our solution intertwined operational site and office work,” offered David Gillies, COGNICA ’s Head of Product Management.

“We were thrilled that our collaboration with Welsh Water contributed to their reduced carbon, reduced cost and innovation goals, enabling their teams to visualise and experience the sites from their remote, immersive igloo for a thoroughly modern experience.”
